Just got the new Chas Smith CD. Wow, I really like it--totally different.

By the way, the packaging is excellent. Definitely gets the Forum Grammy for Best Album Design.

Way to go, Chas.

I just got it a few days ago. I have no idea how Chas is getting the sounds, but they're beautiful. I like how the music keeps my interest without sounding (to me) at all dissonant. I don't know if this is what Chas was thinking, but large sections sound like they are loosely based on the 7th chord and related notes. It's fun ear training.

If I focus my entire attention on it, the effect is very positive and profound. Too bad people can't hear this stuff when they're driving to work.

This is the best 15 bucks I've spent in a long time.

BTW: Chas and I aren't related, and he didn't pay me to say this.

Gentlemen, thank you.

Very loosely, and good ears. You could think of parts of it as being modal since modal is about emphasis. By that I mean, a modal scale emphasizes certain notes. If you were to take a solo in D dorian, you would probably emphasize D, F, and A, even though the scale has all the same notes as the C scale. The four most important notes, in the 4th cut, are C, F#, E and B, in that order. There is a D pedal tone which makes it a D myxolydian (D7) scale/structure, that eventually "rolls down" to a C pedal tone, which makes it a C lydian structure. Sort of a dominant to tonic resolution.

Are short MP3s allowed to be posted?

Dennis, thank you for asking, I guess that would be ok, b0b may have an opinion, I'm going to defer judgement to him since he's the leader.

You can post links to MP3's, of course, but we don't have the bandwidth or server space to support an MP3 library at Forum Central.

Sorry my post was misunderstood. I 've been interested in hearing "snippets" of Chas' new CD (and also left a post to that effect in the "music forum").

I just wanted to hear something from it before buying it. Guess I'm cheap

At least now I understand why b0b doesn't post several short mp3s for each "cd of the month".

But now that I think about it, maybe sales of the "cd of the month" would increase if forum members could hear something from them?

Any ideas?

I'm not sure if snippets would be all that representative of the entire CD. Unlike pop/traditional music, where each cut is essentially the same as the others, I'd like to think that here, the music evolves over the course of the CD, keeping in mind that the sounds do have a similarity throughout. This isn't the kind of music where you'll be tapping your toes or humming along with, unless you've taken some serious drugs.

Ron, if you're out here with Danny, stop on by.
