Frank... To my recollection, the difference in the sound of the old and new tube Standels is very little. I can't honestly compare the two because I was using a Bigsby through the first Standel I owned and it's been forty years since I played through an original tube model. I remember them having a warm sweet sound similar to my new amp but about a third less power. The difference in the tube and solid state Standels are as you would expect, but still, the transistor Standel is the warmest solid state amp I've ever heard. I used a solid state Standel on several Ray Price albums.
As for effects, in a live situation, I use a variable delay for most songs and reverb for faster tempos. One exception is the Midnight Jamboree, which I worked recently. On that night, my effects were off most of the time.
