Hey Drew,
The only thing I know about Hal is that he plays the Day setup and also he tunes his 2nd string to C# like you're supposed to  , Weldon Myrick does that too. I tried it years ago and love it, I just can't hack the Day setup though...........JH

It has been years since I last saw Hal's copedent. But I do recall that the last time I checked, it was unique, especially on C6.
Hal has his own style and his own tunings. He KNOWS what he wants and he KNOWS what changes will get it.
Not for everyone of course, but for him, it epitomizes one of the most awesome players ever to play a steel guitar.
Hal was one of the players that asked me to produce Atlanta's first steel guitar convention. I shall always love him for the way he supported and graced that show.

Don't know if he's still useing it, but his copedent is in the Winnie Winston book.
Been a long time,, he's probably changed it several times, I would imagine.

I've got one of Hal's old Emmons.
The original paperwork was still in the
case. I'm pretty sure the tunings are
listed on it (from the early 70's).

Hal uses a C6 tuning. I do not know all of his changes on it. I asked him what the back neck tuning was at the Knoxville Show several years ago, because I noticed he seemed to be on nearly the same frets as Paul Franklin, who uses C6. He said he went back to C6 because he would not use all those changes on his E6/E9 (?) enough to stay as effective with it. I believe that is the tuning he used on the jazz tunes on his "Altered Ego" recording. It was on a Franklin pedal steel guitar, BTW.
He is just an incredible player and stylist, who does not have a single weak point to his playing. That cannot be said about every top pro!
