Thanks to fellow Forumites and many others, our benefit for Lou was a success! Over $700 was raised to help Lou and his wife Addie with medical bills. The pickin' and grinnin' started at noon and lasted until 8 PM. It was just like the old days when fans, family and musicians got together to help someone in need, to listen to and play some great music.
*Special thanks to Al Parrett, Larry Bales, Mike Perlowin, and although they were not able to attend, Jerry Hayes and Al Vescovo called and sent their support, as did Tommy Wiggins, Derrick Roberts, Jimmy Lester, Clarke Rohn, Arlene McKuen, Al Bruno, Kenny Bensen & The Doo-Wah Riders. Mike Addington and The Killer Ducks (with Jimmy Gallegher and John Hill) let us use their equipment and played superbly. Just some of the other musicians included; "Uncle Pete", Walter Collins, Hoss Cox, Johnny Laird, Barbi Mathews, Al Brown, Johnny Fraley, Dale Thompson, Skip Harrison, Lonnie Duckworth, Dion Irwin, Larry Settle, Dean Lane, Laura Lynn, Phil Baron, Mike Kelly, Joe & Teecee Eiffert, Leo J. Eiffert Jr., Brad Lewis, Steve Curry, Frankie Russell, Danny Mayer, Jerry Rainey, Laura Lee and Frank Rose.
**Monday night, at The Crazy Horse, prior to his performance, Merle Haggard was handed a CD of Lou Martin's Gospel interpretation of "Swingin' Doors" , which Lou called "Father, Son and Holy Ghost" (he played all of the instruments). In the old days, Lou played guitar with Merle, as did Al Bruno and Roy Nichols. Lou had just enough strength to sing his wonderful version for us at the benefit, and it was fortunate timing to get it to Merle the day following it's debut. Leo J. Eiffert Jr. brought the CD down to Merle and had a nice reunion with Al Bruno, Frank Mull, Norm Hamlet and Biff Adam, who succeeded Leo as Merle's drummer in the very early days.
***MANY, MANY THANKS FROM LOU MARTIN!!!!!
