I sometimes use various things to mute the open strings at the nut, the thumpy tone is nice for blues rythym, and it kills bar noise some as well.

I remember long ago some bebop players had a spring-loaded mute that sat on the headstock, was easy to engage or flip up quickly.

Does anyone have any idea where these might be aquired?
