Jerry has never played PSG. While he may have recorded SGR on different tunings, the ONLY recordings I know of; he used C6/A7 tuning as follows:
E
C
A
G
E
C#
On his 7 string he used:
E
C
A
G
E
C#
C
His album with SGR on "Steel guitar favorites" used his 7 string pre-war Rick.
Jerry is one of the few players on earth than can make C6 sound almost identical to an open E tuning while playing SGR. This is particularly true when he is picking the opening parts before the bridge. I can show it to you, but it is difficult to pull off AND do! I have not a clue how to do tab, or I would tab it out for you.
Incidently, Tom Brumley does a great copy of it on his CD (In Time), using a 7 srting Rick. Tom wanted to learn how JB did it on C6. My dear friend Wayne Tanner of San Antonio, Tx (Mr Rickenbacker and a JB clone ) drove all the way to Branson to show Tom just how Jerry accomplished those "open string" sounding licks using C6 to play our "signature" tune. Awesome!
I feel confident "the record lady" has JB's C6th recording, because that was his most popular; and she tries her best to remain very authentic. And if one is not authentic recording; and someone calls it to her attention, she will graciously apologize and make it the authentic one, if she possibly can.
She did this for me on Edddy Arnold's "I'll Hold You in My Heart". She inadvertantly had used a rerecorded version minus Little Roy wiggins. I wrote her and within 24 hours got an email apologizing; and she had already corrected it. God bless that dear lady.
Hope this helps, and may God bless you too,
