Porter Wagoner Steel

Does anyone know who played steel on the Porter Wagoner In Person album in 1964? It sounds like Walter Haynes. He did some great stuff for 1964. I've had the album for years and now have the CD.

On the cover of the album,it shows Don Warden on steel. Albeit,Don was one heluva business man,(he was,pretty much,responsible for putting Porter,(& Dolly) into the mainstream),I don't know who it is but,I don't believe that's him on the album. That's all I'll say on that.

I think Porter told me Hal Rugg played on both his live albums...but I could be mistaken...

I also have that album recorded in Porter's home town of West Plains, MO. Chet was here for the recording as producer. The steel was a bit bashful at first but as the session progressed, it came alive and was super.

Well here goes my two and half cents worth,
Don Warden, Hal Rugg, Buddy Charleton all on some of Porter's recordings.

This might burst a few bubbles but don't forget the late Pete Drake on some too. Pete Drake on his hit "The Green Grass of Home."

Porter was from right up the holler as we say in Missouri. You might not know it but he had a sister who sang around Springfield, MO too.

Catus-Don Warden has been Dolly Parton's road manager for about 25 0r 30 years.He was there when I worked for Dolly in'89 and'90...he is a great guy and a very thorough road manager.

I'm not certain which recordings Buddy Charleton played on, but he himself referred to playing on some of Porter's early reordings from the 1960's. I read it on his biography of his "Almost Tulsa" LP.

You might try to get a copy of that L.P. or cassette if you can. Buddy Charleton and Leon Rhodes knocked us out on that compilation. It used to be available through Tom Bradshaw's Pedal Steel Products, CA, USA.

Yes, I believe it did Nick. If I'm not mistaken I believe it was 8 stringer, and seems like I seen it on display at Opryland years ago.

There was a thread on Who played steel on Porter's tunes. One clarification:

Charleton certainly did play on a Porter session - the album was called "Y'All Come" He and Buck T just burned it down. Notable cuts were "Howdy Neighbor Howdy", "Company's Comin'". A single 45 rpm was released earlier but not on an album that I ever had - the title "My Baby's Not Here In Town Tonight". When I heard this I went to Ollie Strong's place (just a kid! around 17) and assailed him for answers [ I believe the thrust of my query was, "What kind of &%*#$%% can do THIS!" Ollie was reluctant to comment but he laughed. He even had a lick or two worked out on it. He taught what he had to me but neither of us could nail the bitch.Don't know why a lot of guys don't know about this recording. bc

Buddy asked me to put this up-he's a Charleton phreak-I think he's got copies of almost everything he's ever done...

Thanks John for putting that up. I´ve got to hunt that album down somehow. You know, Cage is the one responsible for turning ME on to Charleton. And you can easily hear the influence the older Buddy had on the younger one and they´ll always be my two favorite Buddies...!
(Not to forget The Big E, but he´s in a different dimension still...)
