I'm going down to the Niagara river and throw my Sho Bud in. After seeing Big Jim Murphy play his double neck stand up I'm ashamed that I have pedals and knee levers on my guitar. Mr. Murphy, you are amazing!
I have thrown the gauntlet down on the C6th neck and am devoting all my spare practice time to it for the next year. I'm gonna study no pedal bar movement alot! |

Ain't he somethin'. AATW brought the house down both Friday and Saturday nights. Best part of the show. With a band and music like that there is plenty of room for Murph to shine. And he did. |

geeeez, just watched a opry show and if I could play with all my pedals and knee levers half as good as Jim plays his steel without anything,my ego would be so big I wouldn`t be talking to non of you felas here. so,right now I`m ok,since I can`t play a lick, at least I can have a big mouth, and argue and complain all the time. |

I saw Jim Murphy playing with "The Wheel" on the "Opry" Saturday night. While Jim is a fantastic Steeler, that Fender D-8 sounds just too tinny.IMHO A Fender Stringmaster w/ the blender knob & dual pickups would be a big improvement.IMO

I had the pleasure of seeing Jim live with the Wheel at Billy Bob's last year with Forumite Bob Blair. He took the time to talk to us afterwards as well.. nice man.
The thing that just slayed me that night was his use of palm harmonics. They seemed effortless, almost like an afterthought karate chop... but every one of them was right on and rang out like a bell. I dunno how he does that.

I had the pleasure of seeing/hearing Murph play a two hour set last week with Redd Volkaert and "Haybale" at the Continental Club in Austin. He's no slouch with pedals either! Glad to see he's back in good health... |

I always heard that chemo-therapy makes one loose their hair. I'm sure glad Jim looked like he did. Tells me he's feeling much better. Anybody heard from Wally lately ??

What's this? You guys talkin' about a "really hot" player...with no pedals??? No knee-lever "clusters"? No "magic" 1st, 2nd and 9th & 10th string changes???
WHAT>? He only had 8 #@*%$!# strings?
Obviously, there's some mistake.
Guess I logged onto the wrong forum or something.
Good thing I taped it though. Now the next time someone says "you gotta have at least 8 knee levers", I can say "come on home with me, son...I wanna show you something..."
Been tellin' ya guys...t'aint whacha got, it's whacha do with whacha got![This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 26 January 2003 at 03:56 PM.] |

Back in the mid 70s,I worked with a group that opened for Jeanie C. Riley, her steel player at the time was Murphy, claimed to be nephew to Jaquin. Is this the same? If so he was killer back then.

Well said Donny, well said. Maybe some of us would play better if we had less. Not that we would be able to do more, just better. Joe [This message was edited by Joe Miraglia on 26 January 2003 at 05:33 PM.] |

Yeah John that little trip we took to Billy Bob's will always be a great memory for me. A couple of months later I was in Austin, and trying to get some sleep on a Sunday night at the Austin Motel, being as how I had an early tee time the next day and then a plane to catch. Couldn't sleep, so got up and wandered across the street to the Continental Club. There was that most distinctive of PSG's sitting on the stage - I got to see Murph and Redd together in Heybale, and it was awesome. Murph was real friendly, and looked great. Shortly after that, he was back in Nashville for chemo. Sure great that he is back in the saddle. [This message was edited by Bob Blair on 26 January 2003 at 09:15 PM.] |

You should hear Murph on the CD that Murph and I did. Some great pedal steel. Just a great player. If anyone is interested, I have them for $12.00 each plus shipping. Terry |

I am gonna say it again, Jim Murphy is one of the all time greats. If you dont believe me, get yourself a copy of Paycheck Live at the Lone Star Cafe, and you will love it. One of my biggest influences on one of my favorite all time albums. |

Can we get more posts of what this unsung great has done on CDs/LPs/videos/or? Thanx! It took me two years to find out it was Big Jim who played the heck out of a Epi Rocco with Hank 3 on Conan O'Brian's show.

I used to live in Nashville and there was a time when Murph played at a club called Gabes ( which wasn't too far from where I lived ) 4 nights a week. I saw him play all the time with some great guitar players, including Redd Volkaert. He is a phenominal steel player, as good as it gets. I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to hear him play as much as I have. Those were some great times! I can't wait to get a chance to hear him play with AATW. He is the quintessential steel player for that band [This message was edited by Bob Watson on 28 January 2003 at 02:01 AM.] [This message was edited by Bob Watson on 28 January 2003 at 02:04 AM.] |

Bob
I remember that - on my first visit to Nashville I wandered into 'Gabes' as it was so close to my motel (you can tell I was staying in the nicest part of town[!!!]); Big Jim was on stage, but I had no idea who he was - I just figured if that was the standard of playing in a 'dive' like that, I'd better re-think my career!
What a nice man, too....

A week ago or so, Kevin Fowler recorded a demo "cover" of Paycheck's "The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised" using several members of AATW including Jim Murphy. The band rocked out!
Now I've gotta learn Big Jim's parts for our show....wish me luck.
Keep on pickin'

Murph's parts on Only Hell back on the original live Paycheck stuff, especially the in the chorus, is some of the finest up-tempo back up work of all time. Highlighted by the great Phil Gazell on the harp playin hot twin stuff. God those guys were good. |

Did Murph play the album cut of "Only Hell"? I just burned my LP of "Slide Off Of Your Satin Sheets" on to CD and was wondering who played the steel.
