I heard "Old Man" (from Harvest, 1972) on the radio the other day for the first time in many years. (The cover band I was in way back in high school played that song.) Does anyone know who the steeler was for Neil back in those days? I don't know Neil Young personally, but I happened to be at a model train show last October wearing my 'Got Steel?' T-shirt - I felt a tap on the shoulder, and a voice said, "Nice looking Sho-Bud!"
There he was - I'd forgotten that Neil was a 'train guy', too!

I think several Steelers have been on different Neil Young albums.
I'm pretty sure it was Ben Keith on "Old Man".
Nils has some credits with Neil listed here>. |

On "Once An Angel", on the "Old Ways" album, the steel was played by Ralph Mooney (and his playing here is very impressive indeed). |

Nick Allen got the link with the goods, scroll up and there it is.
Ben Keith was playing with Neil in '73 when Neil Flanz with Gram Parsons and Emmylou hooked up, tere's some cool stories of late night pickin' and I'm sure if Neil saw this he'd add his thoughts as Neil knew Big Ben from many years before. |
