In Richard Smith's Rickenbaker book, it shows Joaquin at a Rick console(promo shot). Did he ever use a Rick in performance or on record? Murph appears to be a bit older in the picture with a slight sunburn(?), possibly just after his days with Tex and Smokey. |

I'm certain he did record at least a couple of tunes with the Rick. If you listen close to any cuts being played, you can likely identify it immediately. |

As much vintage Murph as I've listened to, I've yet to hear what I thot would be a 50/60s Rick console. Maybe it was on the last few cuts he did with Spade? |

During the years I knew Murph,he told me of a couple Ricks passing thru his hands including the 8 string 1951 Silver Hawiian G-Deluxe which I now own. Tom Morrell told me he saw Murph playing a D-8 Magnatone in the 50s and he sounded the same as he always did.Apart from that and the 6-string Dickerson he started out on,most all his early career was spent playing Bigsbys - primarily a triple 8 w/no pedals. |

So far, I'd say it's safe to assume that he didn't record much, if any on a Rickenbach/ker. And, that the pic in Mr. Smith's book is just promo. But, what about the National that Smokey gave him to use instead of the Dickerson(and where are they!). Are there examples of either on record? Michael, thanx for jumping in on this, what size bar did JM prefer? And thanx to all! |

Murph was always looking for a better bar.He said he tried every kind of bar you could get back when he played with Spade and those guys and was never quite happy with any of them. When I got him playing again and he asked me what I thought he should use,I laid out all my bars and told him to take his pick and he ended up favoring a Dunlop 1" x 3 1/2" bar.It was actually a 12 string bar but it suited the wide string spacing on the 9-string Smith Custom that Chas Smith built for him in 1996. -MJ- |
