Stephen, Nice photos, never really got to see your dad's picture. Have always liked his playing especially with Jerry Jeff and John Prine. Post as many as you want.

Cool...I'm glad you guys are enjoying them...I had a ball going through them and formatting them for the web.

I just love looking at pictures from that time...I mean "Slim and Dick and The Saddle Lights" .....haha...different times.

Also seeing my Dad with his early Steels, imagining him spending hours customizing, figuring out licks, adjusting his tuning...just all the things great Steelers did/do. It's inspiring to me.

Peace and Love,
Stephen

Great stuff... amazing to see how things "evolve" (if that's quite the right word ) ... it's clear that your dad was one of those who understood that the steel has a place in many different contexts.
Thanks for putting these up.

I met your dad back in 1968-69 when he played regularly in Bakersfield and I worked at a local bank. He was a great innovator and had a style that was uniquely his own. I'm glad I knew Leo.

Thanks for the replies...I'm really honored to be his son.

I should have mentioned earlier that my brother Thomas has done the most work archiving photos, Newspaper clippings and all of the old reels my Dad saved.

I really liked the stuff in the article about Leo's days with Jerry Jeff Walker, those records were a real big influence on me and I think the steel work on most of Jerry Jeff's music doesn't get the recognition that it deserves.

Stephen:
Your Dad played on Red Simpson's "Roll Truck, Roll" album as far as I know. The tone and playing is unreal, just great. There were no credits for players on the jacket of the record but I think Red told me it was Leo at a show he did with us in California about 25 yrs. ago or more. I was a fan before I even knew who it was that was playing all that cool stuff on that record. It's one of my favorite albums to dig out and listen to time and time again. And the trade-offs between the steel and the Telepicker (who was that ??) are out of sight.

Your Dad was very inovative. Cool, great stuff.

Tiny, on Red's Capitol albums of the 1960s it was Leo on steel and the late Gene Moles on lead guitar.

Yes...everyone must own that Red Simpson double album CD they reissued a couple of years ago.

My Dad was really proud of those records...he came up with the main riff for Roll Truck Roll and loved it so much that he wrote a new song around it called Roll Steel Roll.

I'm glad you can appreciate what those guys were doing the way I do...the jazzy/funky leads they were trading on verses and choruses are priceless. A moment in time.

Jason & Stephen:

Thanks for that info. I'm still playing the original cassette copy from the original LP of "Roll Truck Roll" which I bought new. I keep the vinyl copy in safe keeping. I'll have to get the CDs.

Fantastic stuff... thanks again.

Hey Tiny...here's a link to that CD at Amazon.com.

Man Behind the Badge-Roll Truck Roll

It's an import so it's a little pricey but they have used copies for sale too.

I might buy another copy.

Stephen:

Thanks for the link. I'm going to order a copy of the CD so I can save the LP intact.
