Funny you should ask for this. I received an email last night from Lloyd.
"Bill,
I imagine there are some folks who would like a copy of Don Helm's and my St. Louis set. But Don and I both request you not make any other than for yourself and Jim Stewart. We both appreciate your helping us in this matter since we are considering trying to make an acceptable CD from the show.

This would be the best news in the steel guitar world this year!
All I could think of was how great it would be to get a copy of that set as I heard it played in STL.
I even remarked to my friends "I would pay $100 to get a CD of that performance!"
So Lloyd and Don, if you have any business sense at all, turn that set into a CD and crank 'em out! This will be the most anticipated steel CD to ever come out!!!!!! |

To me that was the highlight of the convention! Lloyd, we really need a CD of the show. I imagine you would have some editing problems but I'm sure it would be worth it. This would be a treasure.

I too thought it was the highlight of the entire convention also..(outside of having Ralph Mooney sign my convention badge right above my name and then saying "you got a good name there....it's been good for me"

Hey Guys, I have just talked with Lloyd and he asked me to post a bit of information.
Since there were many people at the St. Louis convention who asked that the Hank Williams set be released in CD form - and Lloyd and Don's feelings are that this was a special moment worthy of preservation- there will be a CD.
Graham Bland and Lloyd are at this time editing and mastering the set. There are l3 Hank Williams tunes and the running time is approximately 50 minutes. As soon as it's available Lloyd will let us know.

I think the possibility of a CD was actually raised by Lloyd during the show. I'd sure be disappointed if it didn't happen. What an event! Those legendary songs, legendary steelers, the great band, and the fellowship we all feel when we're at Scotty's (or listening in).
I still don't know of anything in music and entertainment quite like steel community. No other instrument has the many shows we're treated to regularly, do they?

Somebody has to say it.
I would predict that the St. Louis performance will not appear on a cd. That's not to say a recording by these two great steelers would not be a very worthwhile proposition, but perhaps the studio environment would yield better results with respect to intonation and the other hundreds of factors in play.
Having said that, I enjoyed the performance in St. Louis very much, and was glad I didn't miss it.

What fantastic news. Count me in for a CD of this most wonderful moment in music at the ISGC.
The live performance brought a tear to my eye.

I don't know about that, John. Technology has yielded some pretty fine live recordings recently. Most noteably in my collection is Hag's Live at Billy Bob's.
I know what you're saying though. These guys are perfectionists and I sensen that you're concern is they might not be pleased enough with the product to release the live version. I'm sure they aren't going to just burn the rough mix on a coaster for us.
Sure sounded fine in the hall that day.

Lloyd Green asked if I would post this information, which I will without comment.
"At this time there will be no Hank Williams set CD by Don Helms and me from St. Louis.
My friend, Graham Bland has worked countless hours on this project, editing, cutting and posting, and E.Q.ing the set, but the technical problems, while certainly no fault of his, are simply too formidible to produce an acceptable CD.
The problem, simply stated is this: The set was recorded direct to 2-track, obviating the possibility for later remixing. If we had recorded this on a 24-track machine, which Graham owns, all the above problems would have ceased to exist.
I should have insisted this be done since our plan was to have a presentable CD and Graham would have happpily obliged us. Because I didn't, we are left with a wonderful memory of that St. Louis Saturday afternoon, but no professionally acceptable CD.
Hopefully, we will record this set again, with a full multi-track machine with Graham and eventually have an album of impeccable sound and quality all can be proud of.
My deepest gratitude to Graham Bland for his relentless efforts to make this a reality."

I am saddened to hear this. The performance was impressive and the stories that Don Helms related about the songs should not be lost. It was great, both historically and musically.
I hope that the set will be recorded again and that Mr. Helms will repeat the narration.
