I have been a fan of S&J since the '50's. Did Johnny always play the steel or pick it up in later years? I thought Santo always played steel with his brother on reguar guitar. Did Johnny ever switch over while Santo was alive? I had the pleasure of meeting him last year in Atlantic City after he played with Richard Nader's R&R show. I am over 50 but it was still exciting as I patterned my playing after him.

Ron to Ron, Johnny has taken up the steel later in life to(at least) cover those parts in his show. From the show you saw, how much steel did he play?

Ron
Santo Always played steel guitar and John played rhythm. It wan not until the brothers
parted that John started getting at the steel.

Of course Johnny watched every move Santo did so he had an advantage in learning the style and moves of Santo.

Since I know both of them personally I can tell the difference in the tone and execution between the two of them.

Johnny is presently free lancing doing shows
with Johnny Maestro and "The Brooklyn Bridge" as well as touring with Jerry Vale on cruise ships.

When Jerry Vale sings the "Godfather" song Johnny plays soft steel behind his singing and then Jerry gives Johnny the spotlight and John does a few numbers and closes with
"Sleepwalk" which always brings the house down with a standing ovation.

Knowing them both as I do and liking them as I always did,I am sorry they are not together anymore.I alwways keep in touch with the boys Uncle Mike Dee who started them on the road to success.

They are both fine guys.
Hope this answers any questions you had.

Jody, what was disturbing in my post? Johnny is alive and well and still twanging out the songs. I saw him in Atlantic City and the NJ Meadowlands, with Richard Nader's Oldies Concert. Both times he played 3 songs including SW of course.

Hi Ron -

You said "...while Santo was "alive".." Made it sound like he was no longer with us....

I wish they would get together again, too. The world is in dire need of a Santo and Johnny reunion album! They made some really nice recordings. I have an album of Latin tunes they did entitled "Mucho", which is outstanding.

I've also always been fond of their recording of "Anna".
