Your entry brought back an old but never to be forgoten event from my music beginings. I was playing at the Turft club in Calumet City, I'll in 1952. Just a block down State Street I heard a person standing and playing a four neck fender steel. Just a young fellow who played single string boogie as fast and as accurate as any lead guiter player could.
I had to talk to this fellow so we hung around together for a while at Harry & Mary's restaurant talking music. This was 50 years ago and I knew this man was destined to be great. His playing made me work harder to play steel. And even when the steel player demand faded and I had to change to guiter and vocal I still kept up with Steel and graduated to pedals. Steel playing has evolved considerably but at 74 I still love and play the mix of Buddy Emmons, Jerry Byrd and Alvino Ray styles. Now I have my wife play bass and with an electris drummer we play anywhere people like the 1940 to 1970 country music. I hope you don't mind an old man rambling but I had to write. Harold Jack-Good to see you still pickin. A lot of guys don't know how much of an very early influence Alvino Rey had on us older guys in the busines. He and Jerry Byrd were the forerunners of a lot of musical styles played today. Jerry is about 81, Alvino 93, and Buddy 66.
I am sure that Buddy E listened to both of them.....al |

This Forum is working out pretty good for all ages of Steel Players and all Styles.
So there is no need for a special club, this is it!
I am sure we all appreciate it. All the way from young Newbies to us old timers...al

"Texas" Jack Baker-
How's that Sho-Bud holding up? Good to see you healthy and posting. And I don't think you're capable of "rambling," just letting us young'uns know where it started. Y'all go ahead and start the over 70 club, but make sure us 40-somethings can read it!! |
