I'm not trying to be controversial or negative. I've seen posts over the months of "up-and-comers" mentioned, and eventually things evolve. So, are things status quo? What's the inside scoop? |

You will find most of the A teams near Fayetteville, North Carolina. Those not deployed to Afgantistan or other un named locations are probably hanging out around "smoke bomb hill" or there abouts. They don't do much steel playing..no time.

| Generally speaking, the guys who make up the group of first-call musicians. They tend to work together on the same projects. But as time moves on, there comes new "hot" pickers, new producers, different approaches. Just wondering what is happening in the Nashville session scene. |

I was curious so I did a little research.
1. I looked at the current Billboard Country Chart
2. I included every entry that listed the credits for musicians in the All Music Guide
3. I copied/pasted musician credits into a text file, eliminated singers, etc,
4. I sorted by name and tabulated the results for all musicians with 3 or more credits -- except steel/reso players (I included them all)
It's important to point out that this only represents a 'slice of time', but does include the best selling country CDs. Some were produced as early as 2000 and as recently as this year. Playing on three or more of these discs is unusual. Some played on as many as nine! I leave it to you to delineate A, B, and C teams.
And yes, Pete, the Players are well represented.

The thing that stupefies me is that if you just take 3 guys, PF, BM, and Steve Nathan, they have made appearances on an average of almost 9 EACH, out of the 14 CDs looked at.
The Players didnt do too badly either. The 5 of them were on 28. That's an average of almost 6 EACH.
In answer to the question: I think the 'A' Team -- the first call guys -- are indeed intact and the current players are pretty well identified. You wonder why a lot of country music sounds similar?
