There's a tune I did a little over a year ago when I got my first lap steel - a cheap Morrell. I wasn't looking for any feedback - I know it's not very good. Just though I would share it with the other folks out there.

Not bad at all. It could have used a bit of variation in the 3 choruses to spice it up a bit. Keep on pickin' my friend! |

I think I tabbed it somewhere. I'll look for it.

Gary, I think it's fine! It has a nice happy, energetic feel to it. It's also a nice inspiration for some of us novice pickers on the forum. Thanks for sharing it. |

QUESTION: Which of some three or four different "TUNING" methods, might YOU use?
Did you use Band in the Box?
HOw long have you been playing steel?
Have you ever heard Jerry Byrd's recording?
Keep up the good work! What equipment did you use? |

I think I used open E tuning but it's been a while. I'm pretty sure I wrote out the tab for it somewhere and the tuning will be on it when I find it. I'll post it later. Then again, I think I posted the tab here on the Forum at the request of another player somewhere. If anyone finds that thread, feel free to post a link to it here.
I don't think I used Band In A Box on this one. I have my own studio here. I might have gotten a piano track from BIAB, don't remember for sure.
At the time I recorded this, I'd been playing lap steel for a few months. Seems like that was last year or the year before. I've been playing (trying) seriously for a couple of years now.
I don't even know who Jerry Byrd is.
My equipment is all computer based. I think at that time I had the Yamaha set up. A pair of DSP Factory cards, Yamaha SW1000xg, Yamaha AX16, I probably had a Mackie SR24.4 or 32.4 then. Funk Logic RNC Compressors, Cakewalk Sonar, Waves, Autotune, Timeworks and a few other FX. Since then, my gear has gotten better but I have even less time to play with it.
I now have a MOTU 24I/O converter (24 in and 24 out) and a Behringer MX9000 console. I just hooked up the 24I/O this week. I'll be gone all weekend but I intend to try some serious recording when I get back. I have some many tunes I want to record, I may never get to them all.
I'm also working on an album for a local guy and I'm a few weeks behind on that. Of course, he's been out of town for a while and hasn't come lately to do any of his parts either.
Anything else you want to know? I'm all for discussing recording stuff.

It just occured to me that some folks might like to have a background track to play this tune. Anyone want it if I still have the orginal tracks?

I did a search in the archieves but didn't find any tab for steel guitar rag. Droopy, if you sounded that good after a couple of months, I can only guess what you sound like two years later. I am amazed that you don't know who JB is? Who's version did you use to record copy when you were learning this song? Did you a use tab to learn it or record copy it? Thanks... |

Jesse, I had a Bob Wills record many years ago that had the tune on it. Just played it from memory. But I know I wrote down what I played somewhere. As for how I sound now, there's not much difference.
Peter, is there any particular reason you mangled my picture that way? Maybe I shouldn't, but I find it a to be offensive. Should I?

Gary, of course you shouldn't be offended! It was a joke, remember? A little while ago you told me to close my eye and pull my lip, so I posted this same picture as a response.
I sincerely hope you are not offended at all. Anyway, I have taken it off. |

Droopy, I learned "Steel Guitar Rag" off an audio sample I got off the internet that I haven't been able to find again, but I taped it with a boom box. It is a bare bones Bob Wills arrangment with no steel solo, Leon sounds pretty young. I have been dragging my heels with learning Tab Edit, but will post my version of SGR before too long. Also I'm playing it in C6 tuning which works out o.k. So now I have gathered enough stories about this song to say I think the story that says Leon put the song together from two sources sounds accurate. Guitar Rag and the Shores of Waikiki I believe to be the source of the arrangment. I read that Bob Wills wanted Leon to come up with something on the spot for a radio show they were doing at the moment, works for me. |

Hey Peter. No big deal. It makes sense now. Guess I just didn't remember you.

I just did a background track for Steel Guitar Rag - just like I played it above but without the lap steel - just background music.
Drums, Keys, Guitar, Bass, Mandolin.
If any of you want a copy, send me an email and I'll send it to you.
