I am getting back to playing after a 30 year hiatus. What would the 8 string tunings be for E and A major, lap steel? I think my 8th and 6th strings were the same note and 7th and 5th stings the same note. Thanks, Ron

Usually, strings are added in the middle for better chord options. If you add the sixth tone (F# in an A major), it gives you full minor chords that you don't really have in the A major tuning.

Here are the tunings I generally recommend:

A6 E13
1 E G#
2 C# E
3 A C#
4 F# B
5 E G#
6 C# E
7 A D
8 F# B
The A6 can easily be retuned to C6 by lowering the C#'s to C and raising the F#'s to G.
