I really enjoy Ry Cooder's lap steel on side 2 of "Chicken Skin Music" (Yellow Roses and Chloe).
Are there any other albums by him with lap steel? Or albums by other artists which feature him on lap steel?

I believe the lap-style playing on Chicken Skin Music is actually done by Gabby Pahinui, the great Hawaiian player.
There is an album by (and I think called) the Pahinui Brothers (Gabby Pahinui's sons) on which Ry Cooder and David Lindley both play, and I believe Cooder may be playing lap-style on one or two of those tracks.
Other than that, his latest record, "Mambo Sinuendo" with a Cuban guitarist, Manuel Galban, has Cooder playing a Bigsby steel on a couple of tracks (do a search in the Forum on "Cooder", "Bigsby" or "Paul Warnik" for more information on this).

Yes indeed. Gabby Pahinui played steel on both "Yellow Roses" and "Chloe" on Ry Cooder's Chicken Skin Music recording.
Also of note is Atta Isaac's slack key solo on Chloe. How did he get those altered jazz chords out of an open tuning so easily?

And here all this time I was telling people it was Ry Cooder who got me into playing lap steel. So it was actually Gabby Pahinui.
Any info out there about this guy? I'd like to find that album mentioned by Nick.

| Well, I guess in essence it was Ry who got you into steel guitar since he had the presence of mind to use such exquisite musicians on his record (he played on a pair of Gabby records as well), when a good part of the world had never known of them before. I, too, was inspired by "Yellow Roses". IMO he's certainly one of the most musical people who ever lived and he's also under-appreciated as a guitarist. Although primarily known for his slack-key and vocal work, Gabby was an excellent steeler. Some of Gabby's recordings will lead you to David "Feet" Rogers, a mighty fine steeler who worked with Gabby in the Sons of Hawaii group.

| A lot of folks get fooled all the time. On L Welks hawaiian album most people thought it was Buddy Merrill on steel when it was actually Bernie Kaai. Buddy is a fine steeler but he did not lead on this album CC |
