Hi SGF:

Pedal steel guitarist Jim Baron from northern California has been visiting us in southern Oregon (the City of Rogue River to be more specific) as part of his annual pilgrimage to the "R-Ranch," which is located in northern California.

Here's a shot of Jim playing his Fessenden pedal steel at the weekly Tuesday night jam session held at the Rogue River Community Center last night (May 5, 2002).

Jim certainly a fine player and it seem like he knows almost every song ever written.

It's been two years since I've heard Jim play (I missed him last year) and there's a lot of improvement in his playing. His improvising is very good and he's very polite with the other musicians and singers in that he doesn't overpower them with his playing.

If you've had the pleasure of meeting Jim along your ways, please post your comments under this subject thread. I hope to have some more photos of Jim on my website next week.

I caught up with Jim at the RR Community Center a few months back, and was amazed that a Central Valley guy knew more about a jam and the players in my area than I did.
When Jeff was doing the classes in Roseville, it was always fun to swap lies with Jim and listen (as mentioned above) to a true BIAB guru. Big Jim, how's the fishin' look this year? Will

When he reads this thread, I'm sure he'll get a real kick out of it.

By the way, what is a BIAB?

What a great guy! One of the best times I've ever had was when David Wright took me to Big Jim's Jam in Sacramento. Ten steels in a cirle playing to Jim tracks.

Thanks Jim and David!

Al, BAIB is Band In A Box, a Windows program that generates automatic accompaniment for songs that you can't get any band in the world to play.

That big smile on this big guy is also an indication of a big heart. He reminds me of Hoss Cartwright on Bonanza. You want him as a friend because if you were in trouble, he could pound your adversary into powder. He has become a great friend of the steel and we who endeavor to play this thing owe him a great deal. I am greatful we didn't lose him to the possible death sentence the doctors diagnosed years ago otherwise we wouldn't have known him and his wonderful wife. Thanks Jim

I had the good fortune to meet Big Jim when he and I took a C6 course from Jeff Newman and Buddy Emmons in the early 1980's. Jim can call all the steel players in Northern California by their first name. If Jim organizes a jam or concert be sure to go.

P.S. He plays good too.
