Hey Pete, It was good meeting you in Dallas. I'm curoius about that too. Wished I could have made it. I did see Robert Randolph in concert last week and he had Calvin Cooke sit in on several tunes. It was really great. Calvin played a Melobar, the guitar body with the neck angled up. It was a 10 string I believe. |

It sure was great. There are too many good players to name, but I'll toss out a few highlights. Maurice Beard really got the house going, Calvin Cooke played wonderfully as always- what an effortless, heartful style. Dan Tyack played with enourmous feeling, and was backed by his Daughter on vocals and his Son on bass- who all did great. Chuck Campbell played as I have never heard him play before- Unbelievable. I didn't know it was even possible for someone at his level to jump up above a high plateau, but he did it. I still shake my head when I think about it.
I always love hearing Bryan 'Josh' Taylor- he is so smooth and gets such good tone. Darryl Blue tore it up on his Fender (some of the time with He and Calvin playing the same single neck guitar at the same time!). Alvin Lee and the Lee Boys, Oh man- I could go on and on. One suprise for me was Shawn Hickman from NC- He is only 20 and really flew- has more of Robert Randolpoh's style than anyone else I heard there. Marcus and Kim Hardy were excellent hosts, Paul C (from the Forum) ran the board and gave excellent sound support. And I didn't even mention having friends there and making new ones- Jim Pallenscar, Bill Leff, and Ian McLatchie.
Mighty Fine, Mighty Fine indeed.

Sage, it was great to see you and your latest creations. Great work.
But shame on you. You forgot to mention Aubrey Ghent's 15-year-old son, A.J. Ghent. What a guy! What a showman! What will he be doing next year? Or in 5 years?
It was a great time. I really enjoyed finally meeting Ian McLatchie, Bill Leff and Jim Pellenscar.
By the way, that earth-shaking boogie piece Chuck Campbell played was in the style of Ronnie Mozee of the Jewell Dominion. Chuck, Phil and I will be recording Ronnie and others for Arhoolie at the Jewell Dominion general assembly in June. There may also be a new documentary video on the Jewell Dominion in the near future. We are looking into raising funding, writing grants, etc.
Kudos to Chuck Campbell and Aubrey Ghent for receiving the Sacred Steel Heritage Award for their lifetime contributions to the art.
Aubrey Ghent blew us away playing, singing and DANCING with a little Gibson lap six-string on a leopard skin strap. He was all over the place--really brought the house down. The James Brown of the lap steel.
It was fun hearing Darryl Blue and Calvin putting my old '57 DeLuxe Eight to good use. Before I sold it to Darryl it spent entirely too much time in my closet.

I have several nice black and whites I can post, but don't have a Web site and too cheap to pay Picture Host.
Anybody want to help out?
