E almost always.

That's why I sit up and listen if it's done in a different key.

I guess I am a bit different. I play it in A then modulate to C, return through the E and finish in A. I think Tom Brumley did it this way.

I used to play it in Eb on C6. When I tabbed it from an old Jimmy Day record, the turntable was probably running a bit too slow. Now that I have tuned all my C6 necks to B6, I play it in D.
Almost all instruction material for beginners/intermediate players include a version of the Steel Guitar Rag. Contact Scotty or Jeff Newman or Herby Wallace.

Question for you who play it on the "E" neck ??? Where do you get the down progression of notes at the 6th measure (I think) In other words ; I can start it out in "E" pedals down and get the first 5 measures straight across but then I have problems finishing what I'm calling "the down progression" of notes (the same ones as the last measure of the verse )
thanx -

Don E. Curtis has an excellet version of SGR on his first CD. It's in E. Starts on the E9 neck, changes to the C6 neck.
There's some neat banjo-type rolls on the E9 second section of Don's arangement.

Bill, I don't start with pedals down. I play it mostly open, no pedals, Start on the fifth string open, hammer-on to 2nd fret, then 4th string open, hammer-on 4th string 2nd fret, slide to 4th fret...

A nice variation that sounds a bit C6ish is to play the first part on the 5th fret with the Es lowered. All the notes are there at the 5th fret. You have to hit the A pedal briefly once

I usually play it on the C6th neck in E and modulate to C and back to E again. I think it's a Buddy Charlton arrangement more or less.Like many others my age, I learned to play it on a 6 string lap steel in E.

Bill Myrick,
If you start out in E, pedals down, aren't you playing it in A?.

Bob--- Sorry I didn't explain myself well -I meant pedals down over 7th fret to have a "pedals down" E .

However--it doesn't have the authentic "rag" sound as what you are all talking about. I need to work on my bar work more I can see that.

Jimmy played it in Eb on C6. It used to drive the Alvin Crow band nuts when he'd sit in because we did it originally in C, and then I started doing it in E. Alvin is a Bob Wills kind of fiddler and didn't dig Eb too much .

I do it in E, California style, and recorded a version of it on my new album. There's a tab book and rhythm track CD available also.

OK, how do you accomplish the modulation from /E/C/E/???

Herb,
thanks for the info on Jimmy Day. You really made my day! I was beginning to feel kind of strange for not playing it in E, but in the company of Jimmy Day I feel quite comfortable ...
