| I'm getting ready to buy 12 JB songs in tab, sold by Scotty, for cruise ship work at happy hour gigs for the late afternoon. I am still green when it comes to what songs would be best to get for that "Hawaiian hula party mood"? What 12 songs of Jerry Byrd's do you think would be the best for this kind of situation? Thanks... |

| Mmm? I'm wondering why no one has answered this thread yet. Is it that most of you guy's haven't bought much JB tab from Scotty's beyound JB's instructional book? Well if that is the case, what songs other than Sand are you JB players aware of that have a pretty good Hawaiian hula party mood, don't worry about the tab at Scotty's, I'll cross check that myself. I didn't see your message when I checked in earlier today. It's a nice day out - perhaps people are enjoying the spring weather!
I haven't bought any of JB's tabs so I can't say which songs would be best. Sorry I can't be helpful in this instance.

| All the standard ones are great, Harbor Lights, Little Grass Shack, Lovely Hula Hands etc etc etc...but be careful, Jerry's arrangements are not beginning level arrangements by any means. They are challenging but worth the extra effort. I hope you have your Forward, Reverse and Split Bar chops together. |

Well, I have worked thru JB's instructional book once and I'm getting ready to do it again for the second time. My thumb is pretty used to the round bar for the slants, so it's just a matter of doing the copy musician thing at this point on my way to that next level. I personally like the more rev'd up songs like "pidgin english" that Jeff posted awhile back. I know JB says Hawaiian music is a mellow music, but it would be nice to know which one of his songs are a little rev'd up and which ones are the classic mellow paradise kind you should know for such a gig.
I'm beginning to see a need for a overall non pedal steel music book in tab that has theory as well as a couple of sets of Hawaiian classics and a couple of sets of Western Swing classics . Seems like I learn something about the theory of steel here and there and then realize that there's gotta be many more ways to skin that cat that I haven't figured out yet (get out the pen and paper boys). I would like to be able to freely jam on steel like I can on guitar in all styles of music, but I'm still searching for those right grips and understanding of the neck on how to get around what's easy to do and what's not as far as the nature of this very cool instrument.
What songs would you guys play on a cruise ship gig on steel with the Hawaiian theme and why? This information would be good for all struggling steel players to know. Thanks... |

I went back and put "*" by the ones I plan on "carring over" with the Andy Iona's ... I just can't do without them ...
I marked the fast/snappy ones ...
It's best to pick ones you are attracted to ... |

I have all of his arrangements ... As Mike pointed out ... they are pretty elaborate.
Those listed above were the songs I played before the Hula show ... just during dinner with various family members strummin' ...
In the bar (after the show) ... when they were singin' and folks were requesting ... it was good to know simple arrangements for things like Pearly Shells, Tiny Bubbles ... I know ...  ... but thats what alot of folks know and wanted to hear ...
So, some strong instrumentals (JB stuff) is great as your "Showcase" ... but an arsenal of simple, common tourist songs is pretty useful too.

Rick's list is excellent.
Basically Jesse the song should tell you how fast you can play it. Both the speed of the chops needed for the arrangement and the general tone of the tune.
It should naturally fall into it's correct groove very quickly.
Some you can play as a ballad AND as a speed piece, start slow and then double the time. If the mood stikes |

I know what you mean David, I play "Nica's Dream" by Horace Silver as a slow ballad on sax and it works real nice. I play this uptempo hillbilly version of "Aloha Oe", but I also play it slow and try and sing it like Bing Crosby.
What would be the top ten most requested Hawaiian songs besides Aloha Oe, that tourists seem to know/sing along with? |

During our last visit to Kona my biggest disappointment was attending a Luau at a 4-star hotel and hearing NO steel-guitar. It was like MTV, only with fire-dancers and a roast pig!

I'm developing an interest for Hawaiian music, thanks to you guys on the Forum. Up to this point it's been rock and blues on the lap steel. The titles mentioned in this thread look intriguing - but where can I get the music / tab? Jesse mentioned Scotty's ???? Could you provide a link s'il vous plait ??
