Looks like I'm in need of an experienced vintage National tricone setup person in the Mid-Atlantic area. Anyone out there know of someone I can trust with a 1928 Tricone squareneck? At the very least, I think I'll need a new bridge insert. Is maple the standard bridge insert material to use for tricones?
Thanks in advance for any help or insight.

Tricones came from the factory with maple saddles.
I'm guessing that you would prefer to be able to carry your guitar into the shop. If you're unable to find someone in the region who is experienced with tricones, you may want to consider shipping it to the "mid-Pacific" -- San Luis Obispo, CA. National Reso-phonic has a good reputation for vintage tricone repair and restoration, as does former National employee Marc Schoenberger. Wyn, I hope by now that you've discovered Paul Beard is in Maryland ... about as "mid-Atlantic" as you can get. (I have!)

Thanks Russ. I'm well aware of Paul Beard's wonderful reputation in the dobro world. That may well be where I end up taking this. Trying to get names of folks who have specifically had vintage tricone work done there as opposed to dobros. |

I understand completely -- I haven't been able to find anyone in Washington or Oregon who has any experience ... although I've had several guys who would love to take my tricone apart to see what's inside!

Speaking of the original maple saddle inserts for these things, has anyone tried either an ebony-tipped or Ebonex-tipped(faux ebony) maple saddle? |

I've tried an ebony-tipped maple saddle, it was on a steelbodied roundneck tricone though. Too harsh IMO. Strangely enough it ended up with a Koa saddle which balanced the more strident tone of the steel body better than maple. For a german silver squareneck I think I'd stick with maple. |
