This question comes up, over and over, and was wondering if there is a definitive web source for this info and/or do you think this might have potential as a forum heading. (Waddaya think bOb?) Could a sortable list be put up with headings like: artist/title/steel player/other players.
Oh yea,
Who was on:
Stand By Your Man?
Friend (Don’t Take Her)?

welll, the obvious solution is to chain Smiley to his PC, on call 24/7 to answer questions.
make it a separate forum section, with SR as "moderator"
Joe Goldmark has a remarkable reference book, The Steel Guitar Discography, but it primarily deals with instrumental recordings, not the who accompanied who... |

No, I was talking about Smiles' grammar. Smiley is right about the two players on the two songs. |

I had, sorta, assumed it was PD on both, but wasn't positive. Only because I always associated him with, what I'd label a more "volume pedal dominant" technique.
Wasn't that Pete on Elvis' "Can't Help Falling"? |

OOPS! I'm embarassed. I didn't see the songs listed at the bottom of the first post. I thought he was just asking b0b about a topic for "Who's the steel player" and Smiley was funnin'.
My humble apologies.

Pete Drake played steel on both recordings. Jim Vest played on Paycheck's "Take this job and shove it." Jim started doing the Billy Sherrill account after Pete retired.

Spoke w/ Jim Vest yesterday. He said it was, indeed,Pete on both, although he (Jim) did record,"Don't Take her...." On Paycheck's Greatest Hits" album. (Perhaps a "T.V."album.) Sorry for the mistake.
