My buddy just bought a Rickenbacher Silver Hawaiian serial number D270 and when he received it there were no strings on it and all of the pickup mounting screws were loose. Which way does the pickup go? On one side the "pole" pieces in the pickup are higher than the other. It is a gradual rise from one side to the other? He turned it so that the raised pieces are on the treble side but now wonders if this is backwards. It is hard to get the pickup adjusted so the low string does not buzz on the magnet.
Any set up recommendations are appreciated too.
2nd question is that the body is steel. Were some of the early SHs steel or was it a hit and miss as to whether to they were steel or brass? It was common on early Nationals to have plated steel bodies or mixed combos of metal used.[This message was edited by Mike D on 14 May 2003 at 09:24 AM.] |

The lead that comes out of the bobbin and goes through the mounting plate always faces the NUT ...
This should put the higher pole pieces under the Treble strings and the flush pole pieces under the bass strings.

My two are brass ... I've never seen a steel one
The Model 59 and NS were steel ....
As far as set up goes ... I like the strings a little closer to the pole pieces than the mags ... maybe 1/3 fom the poles and 2/3 from the shoes ... depending on the "flare"' of the magets.[This message was edited by Rick Aiello on 14 May 2003 at 09:53 AM.] |

Thanks Rick.
He also asked about spacers under the adjustment screws that he's seen on some Rics. |

Not all bobbins had staggered pole pieces ... some were all flush.
The average length of the pole piece seems to be around 0.625" with diameters of about 0.125".
As far as the spacers ... my '39 Silver has black rubber "gaskets" under the "mounting moons" ... my '37 doesn't.
As much as I love a good Ricky ... some of their work was, lets say .. not too consistant
Jasons new bobbin has adjustable pole pieces ... a great improvement.

The higher poles (poles stickin up out of the bobin the highest) belong below the thinner strings.

Rick,
I had a plated steel Silver Hawaiian years ago. I cannot remember the serial number. They probably ran out of brass for a short while.
