I was listening to a Patsy Cline cd today, and the song "A church, a courtroom, then goodbye" played. As is always the case with me and old songs. I was curious about who the steeler was, and this is the place to find out!

I would venture to say Walter Haynes, as he was the steeler on most all of her early stuff. Song was released in 1955 on Coral label.

I believe it was Bob Foster. Very early recording -- live at the Opry -- maybe '56?

assuming you heard the original studio recording, it was don helms.
recorded in june of 1955, and in fact her first released studio recording.
helms was on all of her recordings through 1956.

Just found this quote: -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Musician Bob Foster, who played steel guitar at the Grand Ole Opry and on many country music records, including the first recording session of Patsy Cline, died Tuesday. He was 71.
Foster had suffered from diabetes and heart problems.
Foster, a native of Greenville, S.C., moved to Nashville in 1946. He worked first with Red Foley, and went on to play on many hits, including some by Carl Smith, Kitty Wells, Webb Pierce and Gene Autry. He performed at the Opry from 1947-1963.
Foster was hired to play on Cline's first recording session, which resulted in the song ``A Church, A Courtroom and then Goodbye.''
