Viewing the photos from the last Joliet show on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association, no one seemed to use a volume pedal and those who played pedal steels (evidenced by knee levers)left the pedals off. Is that a custom at the show?

Fred,

You don't need pedals. Pedals are the remote control of the steel world. Stand up if you want to change the channel! Do it with your hands or don't do it!

Seriously though, there are no rules at the HSGA Joliet convention as to what type of steel or equipment you choose to, or are required to use. I've seen both pedal steels and volume pedals used on stage.

But the vast majority of players use non-pedal electric or acoustic steels and no volume pedal. Most players plug directly into the amp, some players use a reverb pedal or digital delay in the mix. Again, no rules, all personal preference.
