Thanks, Jeff!

You've warmed up a(nother) gray Seattle day -- I've got my Aloha shirt on now, and may change into shorts to listen again.

Now if I could just get sound like that to come out of my post-war Bakelite ...

Now lets go way back in time and hear Sol Hoopii ...

"Electro Sol"

This tune is from a radio transcription (without titles to the songs) ... Sounds similar to the "Sons" version you shared .... is it the same song ???

Actually I have a 1929 recording of Hano Hano Hawaii off the Sol Hoopii: Master of the Hawaiian Guitar Vol 2 .... featuring Sol on Tricone and Andy Iona on sax ... but it really doesn't sound like the song you listed ...

I don't really know where that came from ... I kinda realized that the words were different (I'm not that good with English let alone Hawaiian), but the melody seemed similar.

It wasn't a Cumquat restoration ... but I have nagged at Mr. Clarke for over a year and he says he's going to do a radio transcription of electric Sol H. next ...

The Sol Hoopii cut that Rick posted is from a collection of 1930-40's live radio transcriptions that has been circulating "underground" for years. I'm pretty sure this is the material that Bruce Clark is going to use for his reissue.

Thanks again Jeff and Rick. Great stuff. And don't forget those great vocals in both instances. Got to admit I'm a little partial to Gabby.

By the way, Charles K. Smith is a Hawaiian singer/guitarist living in Jupiter, FL, near Palm Beach. He says he is related to Gabby and sings in a similar style. Charlie just sent me a notice about the 2nd Annual Hawaii Calls Florida Ho'olaulea coming up in October. Last year steeler Ed Mayer was among the many good musicians that played all day amd into the night.

I have posted more in Events and Announcements.

Oh Man, a big show in Jupiter ... I'm always "A day late and a dollar short"

I grew up in W. Palm Beach and got to know Ed when he first moved there from Oahu in the early 90's.

He played all the Rudi Wairata songs (they were buddies) every bit as good as they were done on Rudi's recordings. He also had an INCREDIBLE steel guitar collection ...

He showed me a bar that Billy Hew Len had given him that originally belonged to Sol Hoopii ... how is that !!

It's nice to hear some of this music as per Jeff's original post!
I am amazed at the Hawaiian musicians and their adeptness at the syncopated rhythms.
The bass work, uke and the steel of Mr. Rogers,,,,it's all awesome!
