When shopping for a good lap steel, I turned to this Forum for info. Thanks to the comments I read here and elsewhere, I made a great decision; I bought a Sierra SL-8. I just wanted to post my impressions for anyone else considering one of these very fine instruments.
I went for the mahogany/legs/George L 5-position pickup options. The piece of mahogany selected by Sierra is simply gorgeous. I have several electric guitars made of this wood, but this is the most beautiful piece by far. The finish is hard, glossy, and really brings out the grain. Sierra's leg system for this guitar works really well. It's rock-solid and easy to use. Three heavy-duty legs easily screw into angled "ports" on the underside. The 5 position pickup was a worthwhile addition, I think. Very versatile. The hardshell case for this guitar is also top quality, as it should be to protect such a beautiful instrument. I highly recommend this instrument to anyone shopping for a lap steel. This guitar is truly a work of art in all respects. The tone is warm and sweet, the feel is VERY comfortable and playable, and the sustain just seems to go on forever. The whole thing vibrates when played, almost like a tuning fork.
Before I close, I just want to mention how pleasant everyone is at the Sierra company. However annoying my incessant questions might have been, they were always answered quickly and thoroughly by the friendly people there. That really meant a lot to me. What a great lap steel, and from a great company.

Thanks for the report. I'm really glad Sierra is making these steels and has expanded the line and number of configurations and options.

By the way, Rochester sacred steeler Lonnie Bennett named his daughter Sierra after his beloved pedal steel.

Congratulations.

Bob, that's a great story about Lonnie naming his daughter, "Sierra." I understand completely. Pretty name for a girl too! Sierra(the company), I believe, is turning some much-deserved attention to the lap steel as an instrument. The SL-8 I bought is really impressive. The engineering, materials, and craftmanship just come together so well. The feel and tone are far beyond what I expected. Do you have one?
Yes, Gary, the leg system is an option for Sierra's lap steels. I was concerned about how solid those legs would be, but now I know they stand like a rock. Yes, they're adjustable(telescoping) so you can stand or sit to play. All the hardware in the bottom of the guitar is set flush to the surface so when I play it in my lap, it feels as if there's nothing there. Nice design and really nice looking too. I'm happy about my choice.
