Kitter Stanley is the daughter of Harry Stanley, the founder of the Oahu company. Oahu as many of you know was based in Cleveland, Ohio and provided Hawaiian steel sheet music, strings, picks and instruments to the world in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Each year Oahu would sponsor a convention for the organization they founded "The International Guitar League".

Kitter Stanley found an entire box of photos from these conventions and donated them to the HSGA. I scanned them and Amy Pace built a page to display them.

You can view the photos without registering, but if you register you can add comments.

Take a look - these are very cool pictures. You'll see how big the lap steel was back then.

Thanks Gerald! Brings back olde memories. The Gibson Co. used to feature photo's on the front of all their music lessons as well........ Used to see lots of enthusiasm in those old pix.........even large groups at recitals.

Much appreciated Gerald. Had it not been for those early 'tabs'
many of us would not have gotten started. Most teachers in those days either played violin in the symphony orchestra or
tri-angle in the local percussion band.

I would like to acknowledge Gerald on the fine job he has done for HSGA. It takes a lot of time and effort to put out something like this. The website looks better than what it used to be in the past.

Thanks for the photo's Gerald. HSGA really ought to be paying you for the work you have done!

Bravo! Very Happy

Thank you Gerald! Very interesting pictures.

I was surprised to see the picture of the Iolana Amp. I've owned two Iolana steel guitars in past years, but I never knew there was a matching amp.

One time I bought a stack of Oahu Magazines called The Guitarist from 1940 and 1941. There were about 20 magazines, filled with pictures like the ones we see here. These monthly magazines were mailed to Oahu students worldwide to keep them motivated. The September 1941 issue featured articles about Hawaii. One was a feature on Pearl Harbor, our "Rock of Gibraltar" in the Pacific. That was 3 months before the devastating attack there.

Kevin, I scanned in the pix at a very high resoloution just for the purpose of user downloads. Just download them and print them up on some glossy paper and you'll be all set. The pictures are originally 8" x 10".

When Kitter Stanley gave the HSGA these pictures she suggested we distribute them to our members. By scanning them and having them available for high-resoloution download we are accomplishing that.

Great shots, Gerald. It's a poignant reminder that before kids had PS-3, X-box, Wii, and 400 channels of cable TV to distract them they participated in making music with people of all ages. I'm sure those experiences created a lifelong love of music as well as enjoyable social connections for everyone. I can't imagine what it was like to hear 20 lap steels at once but it must have been fun for the players. Thanks for your efforts in preserving this glimpse into a lost world.

An amazing and inspiring collection of photos. I would love to hear one of those bands with 8 or 10 steel guitars.

It's also interesting that the accordian played such a big part at the guitar convention.

Hi Gerald,

I tried downloading some of the pictures but when I bought it up on PhotoShop and checked the image, the size was very small, 1 X 2 inches and only at 72 d.p.i. resolution.

Am I doing something wrong? How can I get the high resolution image you mentioned.

Thanks, D.M.

Hi Derrick,

Here's what you do.

Select a picture.

In the upper right side of the screen there is a box for selecting the size of the pix. Select the largest size.

Right mouse click the enlarged picture and save it to your computer.

Thanks Gerald for all your work on the HSGA Forum and to Amy as well.

The pictures bring history to us in the present. Too bad we don't have some narrative along with the pictures.

I had the occasions to see some of the old Oahu Conservatory pictures through a friend Vern Cornwall. Some of the pictures included Herb Remington, himself and I believe Buddy Emmons. He recently gave the pictures to Herb Remington so that they could be passed on and appreciated more.

Aloha, Smile
Don
