Hi,

In response to an inquiry about my book project(s), here's an update.

I have a contract with University of Illinois Press to write a "Sacred Steel" (working title) book for their Music in American Life Series. These books are typically 250 pages or more, 7" x 9", hardbound first, then followed by paperback about a year or two later. This book will not be photo-rich. The final manuscript is due Sept 2003. My guess is that it will be released sometime in 2004--but I'm only guessing.

The University Press of Mississippi has expressed an interest in a Sacred Steel photo book. The idea is a book of about 100 large images (black and white), drawn from my 4,000 images, printed on good stock, probably printed as duotones, approx size 12"X12" . Hardcover and paperback would be released simultaneously. I have no contract at this time, but interest by the editor-in-chief is very keen. I expect to submit a formal proposal in early 2003. I may fish for other publishers too.

That's the scoop. It's all very exciting for me. Thanks for your interest.

Best,

Bob

Hi Jeff,

In my case it's easy. The photo book will consist of images carefully chosen from the approx. 4,000 documentary shots (and still increasing) I have taken of the House of God steel guitarists and congregations over the past 10 years. I may include a small number of historical shots, for which I must get permission. It's common practice to pay for such loaned photos with books. For example, Willie Eason might agree to let us use a copy of an old photo, we give him X number of books.

As for doing a book of photos copyrighted by one or more photographers, you must be careful to get permission, and pay if necessary, for every photo used. The price and terms of use run the full gamut from peanuts to big money. Obviously, you're not going to get Ansel Adams for peanuts. As you might imagine, some high-end photographers might be pretty selective regarding what publications their works appear in--at any price.

By the way, my photo book will also have quite a bit of text to help contextualize the images.

The Illinois book will probably have a couple dozen photos printed (if I have my way) on coated stock.

Best,

Bob
