Anyone know what model/brand amp Hal Aloma was using with his Epiphone Steel?

Derrick, the only time I saw Hal he was playing his guitar on a Epiphone amp that looked like a 1930s console radio. The amp guts were in the center and spkrs were in the sides. Bobby Nichols also used this type at times when he was with Lani McIntyre. You folks that were in Columbus Ohio in early 50s may remember that Ira Trotter had one. Ira had a sit down job at a hotel(can't remember name) on Broad st just west of High and on the southside I believe. Good thing he had the sit down as that amp configuration weigh a ton. CC

Thanks C.C.

I have a few video's of him with the Lani McIntire Orchestra. Hal had his steel on some wooden contraption that had a design on the front but it was difficult to tell or see what kind of amp he was using. I always wondered what kind of amps they used for these shows to keep up in volume with a full orchestra.

These were Epiphone amps. There were two 12"spkrs. I never got close enough to see how many tubes etc. The grill cloth inthe center of the console had Epiphone in script running from lower right to upper left. cc

Looking back in the archives this is a later model than the one Hal was using when I saw him. They moved the spkrs to low in the middle and the oblong with writing is for appearence. I found an old photo of Bobby Nichols and according to a friend of mine who was an Epiphone dealer the players did not like the low spkrs and Epiphone changed to one 15" spkr mounted in the middle close to the amp guts. They sure don't make 'em like that any more!

Hal used a similar rig in the late 40s when he was in the Dorsey band along with Sinatra.
