Any old Jerry Byrd fans or old Hawaiian players ?? If I played an old bakelite Rickenbacher steel thru an old 30s Volu-Tone amp would I get close to the Byrds tone ?? Thats what the Byrd used up to the late 40s and I've always wondered if using that equipment you might sound like the Byrd !! Any one ever try this or know the answer ??

I think it would help you get closer to Jerry's sound if your technique is already similar to his. As to the old Hawaiian sound, I think a bakelite is a good choice. |

I longed for such a guitar for years and years. Finally the guitar arrived and I STILL DID NOT sound like JERRY BYRD.
I was convinced I just had to find a Volu-Tone amp and altho' I've bid on more than one that has appeared on eBay, someone else always got the roll of the dice.
ARE ANY OF THOSE FOLKS Forumites? Let's hear from you.
I'm convinced the guitar is the first most important step; then pickup adjustments and proper strings.
But as an alternative, I've found several little amps that will come extremely close to the Volu--Tone sound. Each has an 8 inch Rolla speaker; and some of the small Jensen speakers sound equally as well. The BEST combination for my broken neck Rick-6 is an Epiphone Electra amp, approx. 10 inch, about 1965 vintage.
Not to be outdone........my Peavy 12 inch
LA 400 with about 1.5 clicks on 'saturation' rings in a very powerful near perfect sound.
Like some have pointed out tho', it's apparently 'in the EAR'. That's how I hears it! |

Have you seen the 7-stringer, pre-war, that the seller on eBay has placed at $2,500 to open? Seems just a little high or doe it?
It's on HILO........ Just how many of these could there be there? |
