I have a 200 gig external hard drive, I had to reformat my computer, & since reformatting I can only get one file to show up on my external hard drive. It was not plugged in during formatting.. My computer just won't read it.. I have another external hard drive, & it reads that one fine.. Is there anyway I can force the computer to read the other drive, if not is there a way I can recover everything off the other drive, it is USB plug in..
Thanks in advance..John

What File System did you use to format the new hard drive? What File System is on the unreadable USB drive?

I had that same problem a while ago. I could not get the computer to recognize the 250 G external, but it saw the smaller external fine.

I called my son for help. He came over and plugged and unplugged the USB ports in different ports and suddenly, there was both external drives.

"How, what, why I asked?" He shrugged his shoulders, "Donno." Whatever, it works now.

Thanks Ken,
well I tried several times to change USB ports to no avail.. (I have 6 USB ports). So I shut my computer off, then turned it on again while the external drive was still plugged in.. Tried again to open the external drive, & everything came up, but when I try to open some folders I get a message saying this folder is not available.(access to this folder is denied). but some others I can open..
go figger..

This may be a user privileges restriction. I encountered the same issue with an external drive because I operate with reduced user privileges. I had to go into an administrator level account and allow my Power User identity full control over the USB drive, then I was able to read and write to and from it.

It is entirely possible that when you installed the USB and wrote files to it, then changed hard drives and setup your new identity, that the USB drive had security settings tied to the former user name and permissions level. Your new hard drive and identity are probably different, thus the security settings are denying you access.

If you are operating as an administrator, or can log into an administrator level accont, do the following:
[list]
  • Open My Computer (icon/link)
  • Open drive C: by double-clicking on it's icon
  • Right-click on the icon representing the external USB drive and left-click to select Sharing and Security.
  • Click on the Security tab
  • See if your current logged-in identity is listed under Groups or User Names. If so, click once on your name to highlight it, then look in the permissions box underneath it to see if you have Full Control, and no check mark in "Special Permissions."
  • If so, you should be able to read and write to that drive and something else is wrong. If you don't have full control over it click on the Advanced button.
  • Find your account name in the listed accounts, click on it and when the Permissions list appears check the top entry, Full Control, then click Apply. Make sure that when you do this that Take Ownership is also checked
  • Now click on the Owner tab
  • Find your identity name and left click on it, then click Apply. Your account name should now appear in the field at the top, for "Current owner of this item."
  • Click OK twice to exit out of the properties boxes and try to access files on this drive.
