What isn't visible in Gene's scam is the link code for the button that would have been embedded in the scam. Clicking on the button to login to your ebay account would take the victim to a look-alike phishing website. When the victim logs in to investigate his ebay username and password will be owned by the scammer.

These are sent out from zombie computers, with email relays setup by spammers and hackers, to every email address known to the spammer/scammer. They only have to fool a few people at a time to make lots of money through their illegal activities. They don't have much time to harvest account details because these phishing websites are usually taken down within a week, or less.

My advise to the SGF members is if you receive an Ebay or PayPal scam, please forward it directly to abuse@ebay.com or abuse@paypal.com . They will investigate and try to get the phishing website shut down. The sooner a phishing scam is reported the sooner the website can be terminated.
