Jack de Toro was apparently from the West Indies and played in the 30's & 40's with Johnny Pineapple. He's supposed to have had a unique, swinging sound. Does anyone know anything about him? Has anyone heard his playing? |

If I'm not mistaken Jack de Toro was the steeler in the Johnny Pineapple band in the 1940's - 50's. Very hot stuff.

I have a number of Johnny Pineapple records with and without Jack. Those featuring Jack are the best by far. He had such a sweet tone. His "Moon on Manakoora" has never been matched IMO. I often wondered what make of guitar he played and also what tuning he used...seems to me he used an E6th, but I'm not certain of that at all. DOWNBEAT, the old jazz magazine, reviewed "Tomi Tomi" as I recall back in the late forties...this was most unusual for the magazine to do as it focused on jazz idiom only. They gave Jack a great review for his phrasing and swinging sound.
He passsed away many years ago...anyone know when ? Anyone have an old pic of him ? |

This guy's apparently something of a mystery man. I've heard just one cut of his and he could really swing. Bruce Clarke of Cumquat Records describes his tone and touch as remaining crystal clear while having the curious quality of sounding like it's coming intermitantly via a short wave radio. |
