What would I need to do to get a Mac Powerbook using OSX 10.4 to download wmv files? Is a wav file a Microsoft file and if so, would I need software that is compatible with both Apple and Microsoft? Thanks, steve t |

You should be able to download them by control-clicking (or right clicking if you have a two button mouse) and selecting Save Link As... in your browser.
To play the WMV files, you can use the free Windows Media Player or the Flip4Mac extensions for Quicktime. Both are available through Microsoft's web site.

I discovered the other day that the Mac version of Windows Media Player doesn't run on an Intel Mac. Not yet anyway.
I installed Parallels Desktop so that I can run Windows on a Mac Mini (at work). I have Windows Server 2003 running in a Mac window, sharing a folder with OS X.

Hey Steve,
What Brad said... go get http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm
The free version allows playback of wmv files from within QuickTime Player. It works quite well... better than things like mplayer or vlc or whatever. Very easy.

Thanks guys, but I think b0b is correct. I have an Intel system Mac Powerbook Pro and I can't dowload those programs. b0b, do I only need to download Parallels Desktop or must I also instruct the computer to do something more? Thanks, steve t [This message was edited by steve takacs on 25 July 2006 at 08:31 AM.] [This message was edited by steve takacs on 25 July 2006 at 08:32 AM.] |

Parallels Desktop is a $50 program that will run any Intel OS inside a window on an Intel Mac. You install the program, then install Windows XP or whatever into it. You have to have an install disk for OS you want to use.
I had a Windows 2003 Server CD lying around, so that's what I used. Works like a charm. I needed it urgently for SourceOffSite at work, because they don't support Intel Macs yet.
It's sort of overkill just to play WMV files, though. I'm sure that a cheap or free solution will arrive soon.

Windows Media Player 9 works just fine on my Intel-based Macs, although it runs in PPC emulation mode (Rosetta). You don't need to do anything but install it to get it to work.
The thing that doesn't work on the new Intel-based Macs yet is the Flip4Mac WMV extensions for QuickTime. Microsoft hasn't announced a date for a Intel-native version yet.

Thanks, guys; for me b0b was prescient & Edward's suggestion of using Flip4Mac WMV - 2.1.0.33 for Intel macs, was the only down load that worked. I sincerely appreciate you two and Brad and Jon taking the time to respond. Please close. stevet [This message was edited by steve takacs on 01 August 2006 at 12:17 PM.] |
