Saw the great Asleep At The Wheel tonight in Irvine and a fabulous show it was. Are any forumites familiar with the band's current steel player, Jim Murphy. What a remarkable player. He was jumping from neck to neck mid solo on his Dual Pro (sounded like C6 and E13), while wearing a tenor sax around his third neck (the one holding his head). Then he blows a wailing sax solo during the same tune !!! Also did some great stuff on his Sho Bud but I won't even go into that. Please tell me Mr. Murphy lives here in Southern California and offers private lessons when he's not on the road.

I have known Jim since he played steel with Merl Lindsay and the Ozark Jubilee Band in 1964.....and everything you say about his musicianship is true.

As great as you think Murph is, trust me... he's better than that!

Sorry, no go on So. Cal. Murph has a place in Nashville, but spends a great deal of time on his houseboat on Lake Travis in Austin. The Wheel is on the road so much, the bus is the 3rd residence.

Great idea, Marc -- that way you can drive the bus back up here for another show. (They were in Seattle last Wednesday. I was in Chicago.)

Marc, Did you get to look at the Dual Pro up close? The guitar has been modified to accept 3 pedals.Murph said he bought it that way and someone before him had the modification done.

Mike,

I didn't get a close look but I could see it had been modifified, mostly to accept some really long legs. It looked as though a base had been laminated onto the bottom of the instrument. I don't know if it was set up to accept pedals but there were none attached. His Sho Bud, on the other hand, had eight and he used them all to great advantage !!

Jim's playing on Red Volkaret's CD, "Telewacker" is superb. Glad to hear he's well enough to play gigs again. One question: did he play the sax sol wearing picks!?

Andy,

Great question. I can't honestly recall whether or not he removed his picks but I'm positive he never spit out his chewing gum .

Did you say Murph was playing a Sho Bud? Last spring I saw him a couple of times, with both AATW and Heybale, and he was playing a very distinctive Bethel that he has had for awhile. He is one of the best of the best, and like Herb said, probably even better than that!

Murph's Bethel guitar looks very much like a Sho-Bud, but IMHO is far superior both cosmetically and mechanically. Dick Miller built a Fessenden for me 6 years ago that I asked look like an old Sho-Bud, and when Dick started building the Bethel, he made them look like old 'Buds as well... though only Murph's has the pot leaf inlay, as far as I know.

The pot leaf inlay was definitely there, but I'd swear there was a Sho Bud decal. The instrument also had a blue mica finish which is something I've never seen on a Sho Bud, so in all likelihood you guys are correct. I'm gonna have to order "Telewacker". Any other recorded works of Mr. Murphy you can recommend?

Yep, that's the Bethel. The pot leaf is what makes it so distinctive. Along with the fact that it looks and sounds wonderful.

It's not blue mica. It's a very dark rosewood with maple top, pearl inlay above and beneath the sho-bud diamond inlay strips.
