all you need is a nut extender...and the tricky part is...strings...If he doesn't want you messing w/ the truss rod...put on a medium set or at least a heavy first and second string (like 16 and 1Cool...but if he doesn't mind you TIGHTENING the truss rod...get a set of DOBRO strings...(Then again it all matters what tuning you'll be using)

Aloha Herb,
usually,(I see you are from Cape May) the OLDEST guitar shop around will have a steel nut extender for like $1.99(usually near the pick jar...or pre made plastic nut box)..I used one for years on a round neck...it just sits on top of the regular nut(loosen the stings and it's already grooved and slip it under) and it's perfect...if you can't find one ResoPhonic Outfitters(Beard Guitars) has 'em for like $4...but if you look around your area you'll probably find one cheaper...and being steel, I think it would be better then physically changing the nut and they are designed for exactly your purpose...Height spacing everything is right on and causes no permenent change and they are cheap......the tone is fine...it's exactly what you need
Aloha,
Mike
Oh and for you, you'd probably be most comfortable w/ High Bass A AC#EAC#E...use medium gauge strings...hey, just like Brother Oswald...roundneck, nut extender and that tuning...

Mikey ,of course ,is right ; The round neck will serve the purpose, it will sound good. Most players I know though use G tuning, like G B D G B D . Try them both ,then use what fits the best.

I used a round neck til I got the fever for a real thing.

Enjoy

I also had a round neck first (Alcivar) until I wanted the "real" thing (all due respect to other than Dobro brands)and I liked the sound of the Alcivar much better than my Dobro. I have subsequently changed the saddle, nut and cone in my Dobro. Since I played A major lap most of my life, I tuned the Alcivar that way and I'm heavy handed so I used really heavy strings. One day, I looked at the Alcivar closely and the neck was separating from the body. So, I sold it......cheap. Being an old boy, I have a couple of nice old brass extension nuts for the Hawaiian guitar set up. Used to use them when I played on old Stellas. Geez, I'm really dating myself here!!
