I have a new PC with XP home edition service pack 2.I'm using a cable modem no router. Should I use the installed firewall or install Zone Alarm? I was using Zone Alarm on my old win98 PC.

You don't want two firewalls as they can conflict and cause problems.

The ZoneAlarm is one of the most popular around. I have Computer Associate's EZ Armor security package and it includes ZoneAlarm Pro as the firewall.

The Windows XP Firewall is an incoming only. The Zone Alarm (and most other Firewalls) are incoming and outgoing both.

Jack, I've not had any conflicts with Zone Alarm and Xp built in firewall, maybe I'm just lucky. I like to use the XP one 'cause it gets updated with the windows updates, I figger Microsoft must know a little about their own OS(wishful thinking?), but if I had to pick one it would be Zone Alarm. JP

Any reason I should upgrade my free ZoneAlarm to ZoneAlarm Pro?

ZA Pro contains additional component modules that handle virus detection and removal, ad blocking, popup blocking, privacy - tracks cleaning, and other maintenance features. It is in competition with Norton Security Suite and McAfee Security Suite. If you already have an adequate AV tool and popup blocker, and empty your temporary files automatically when you close your browser, there is probably nothing there for you to gain.

I use XP's Firewall for just as much time as it takes to get ZoneAlarm installed, then I disable the XP firewall. Having visited the Microsoft campus recently, I just don't trust them to get anything right anymore.
