It's lonely being a non-pedal steel guitarist. Late nights all alone, just you, your guitar and the stereo. Your own internal critic your only companion. Where do you get honest advice about improving your playing? Your internal critic is frequently too judgemental, critcizing your every note and phrasing attempt. Or your the internal critic can lie to you, creating a false sense of security and accomplishment.
So what can you do? If you played Rock guitar you could go down to your local music store and easily find a rock guitar teacher who would set you straight and offer constructive criticism. Steel guitarists, especially non-peddlers don't have such a luxury. Face it guys, we don't play the world's most popular musical instrument. Instructional material and teachers are pretty much non-existent.
All we have is this forum and each other.
What we need is a website where we could upload our musical attempts for critique. We could post our songs and ask for constructive criticism and advice.
Pretty scary huh?
Who's got the disk space?

Man, you gotta get out more!!!..I'm worried about you...you gotta be able to find SOMEONE to play w/...I found, get one of those cheap Uke's for the old lady for no reason at all(musicians friend or Elderly has those Johnson's for like $30)...and if you set it up, it is a decent little instrument...and teach her how to play it...shoot...CFG and Bb chords cover a LOT of songs...can even get her a grass skirt..make it FUN...because that's what it's really all about..FUN...and yeah, we can upload and play our demos..but live interaction...when your playing live..NO ONE HEARS the clams...but just the tape(which don't lie)...it's ok...but...especially steel needs to be taught one on one and the teacher needs to see what you are doing...that was one of the reasons I contacted JB..I went through the book...but I needed personal instruction...but as long as you can play and make people smile...that's alright w/ me.

Mikey, Jody, I do get out, just not Hawaiian or steel "out".
I play instrumental Jazz/Pop standards on my "standard guitar" at a fancy little restaurant here in Ann Arbor a few times a month. Nice gig. Decent dough, I play whatever I want, it's two miles from my house and I'm home by 10:30.
Finding people to play Hawaiian music is a problem though. At jam sessions people will put up with one or two numbers then they want to get back to Bluegrass or Celtic, Old Timey or THE DREADED SINGER SONGWRITER.

Soundclick is free and very user friendly. It's a kick watching your stuff in the charts. Once I had a tune get to #3 on the jazz charts and I was right behind Lee Ritnauer !! |
