SOUND CARD......problem?

A fellow Forumite has an older Dell-166 that is in excellent working condition, in spite of its age. He moved the unit a short distance and now the AUDIO will not function as it should.
All is wired as the diagram dictates. Noice is heard in the speaker set-up if the speaker plug is grounded.
At first he got notices that there was no sound card. Then, after trouble shooting, he gets notices all is working okay.
He gets no "sound" at all; no M/Soft noises or CD music. Any suggestions?

First, check the speaker system on another PC.

Sounds like a Win98 machine. Use the "sounds" facility in Setup to generate "dings" until you get sound out of the card. (Select "asterisk" and click on the little triangle next to the speaker icon). Also, go to "control panel" "system" "device manager" "sound and video controllers" and click on the entry for the sound card device and see if the device list says it's working properly.

You could also then try reseating the sound card (power off) and look for results. Also try reseating in another socket (may need installation software if change socket, probably ISA socket).

For audio playback check that sound cable from CDRom is going to proper socket on the sound card (4-conductor round, not the ribbon cable).

Also, confirm that the speaker wire is plugged into the correct jack in the sound card. Try to sound the "ding" with the jack in each socket. (It shouldn't hurt anything)

Also, If you dont have the volume control icon on your taskbar do a search for sndvol32.exe and see if the sliders are set properly and the channels enabled.

Sure do appreciate your advice re: my sound problem.Got the info from the Forum and have tried as much as I can "figure out" following your instructions. I DID get actual music playing (which I haven't been able to do before) thru the sound system by going into one of the places you said to check(in "DxDiag" in the MIDI mapper) so it MUST be hooked up correctly, the speaker system operating correctly, soundcard must be in proper socket, etc. BUT somewhere there is SOMETHING that is not ON..... Not sure what to do next (after the above info) so checking to see if you have any further suggestions. My email address is :

Any other suggestions for resolving this frustrating glitch? Loud music like a CD during the test program but nothing beyond that. There has to be something more he can try. I'm just not a computer wizard so can offer nothing from my end. PLEASE HELP!!!!
