I was looking at this website http://www.westernswing.net/morrell/stylin.htm
about Tom Morrell's new CD, and read this statement:
And the Dobro! As innovative as his non-pedal steel guitar playing is Tom’s virtuosity on this traditionally “Bluegrass” instrument. Morrell’s talent and experience, along with his own tuning give the Dobro a new voice! It’s featured on three of the tracks.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what "his own tuning" is? - on dobro, that is, I know about the 10-string non-pedal one. (I have a feeling this may have come up before, but I can't find it with the "Search" function)
Thanks
Nick

I once posed the same question with regard to his tuning and the response was that he played a six string with the standard G tuning. Whether this is actual or not, his touch, tone, and phrasing are wonderful with a slight "Djangoesque" ( pardon me while I make up my own language) feeling.

Absent are the banjo rolls and the hopping around hammer ons and pull offs. No fluff or filler, just lean beef.

It's interseting how steel players approach and play the "dobro." Somebody should produce an "unplugged" album of steelers....

When I recently interviewed him, Tom told he plays in standard G tuning on Dobro and E13th on electric steel.

Thanks - I guess it was Howard's thread that I remember but can't find - my recollection also was that it was straight G tuning. I guess the "blurb" on the website was written by someone who was confusing the dobro and 10-string tunings... (or doesn't know much about bluegrass dobro )

I think the reason you can't find that info is because it was a post in a thread, possibly the result of some topic drift, and not a thread devoted to either "dobro" or Tom Morrell.

If anyone could locate it, it would be Andy Volk, "Lord Of The Links"...

Tom Morrell is one of my favorite non-pedalers. Those soundbites were all I need to hear. I ordered "Stylin" on the spot.

Oh my gosh...that's my thread about "dobros".
I guess it's not just my hair that's thinning, but my brain cells too......
