That's a problem with most older Cannon printers. You are replacing only the ink cartriges, and not the print heads. (Plus those felt pads dry up, if you don't use the printer for a long time). With most other printers, every time you replace the ink cartrige, you are replacing the print heads along with the ink supply. That's why the cartriges are higher in price.
With new printers starting at $60 or less, why not retire the old Cannon? I have a Lexmark all in one printer, scanner, stand alone copier, that I paid less than $80 for at Sam's club, and it works great. (X83).
