Just a note to let you all know that I recently went through a lot of frustration with my computer doing squirrelly things only to to find out I had a trojan horse virus that Norton "did not" pick up. The computer specialist that found it said that they have quit using Norton as it is missing many of the latest viruses even with their continual updates. They even had one on their server that took it down for 3 days do to Norton not catching it. He installed AVG virus software on my computer and it found the virus. It had corrupted 85 different files in my computer and was just playing havok with processing.
I am not trying to sell anything only to be sure that you all know of my experience so that you don't have the same problems.
They are now saying that these virus are coming in on e-mail even from those that you know. I had a firewire in place and Norton running full time when this happened. I hope that this helps some of you.

AVG is available from www.grisoft.com. Free to good homes (i.e. noncommercial).

Free version download page is http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php

I think you're supposed to remove Norton before you install AVG Free.

I went ahead and purchased the commercial version which is $50.00 for 2 years with continual updates. You are correct in that Norton was removed before the AVG was installed.

I did the free AVG. My computer never worked again after installing and running the free AVG. Had to format the drive and start from scratch.

I've used Norton since 2001 and have never had a virus get loose. Lightning is more my nemesis. I've had it quarantine some, including trojan horses. I have it set to automatically download and install updates. It also should be configured to scan e-mail and attachments and to to a complete system scan at least weekly.

I think I have it confugured now(at home) to try to repair infected files and to quarantine them if unsuccessful. There's another option to delete them if the repair fails. Their recommended setting is "automatically repair" but that one doesn't say what it does if the repair doesn't work; I guess it asks you what to do.

Where I used to work we used McAffee, which always worked for me.

Nice business model, eh? Biz gets a little slow you just crank out a couple worms... That's just the cynic in me, I have no evidence of any such behavior.
