I just got the latest "Restoration" from Bruce Clarke.....

Andy Iona "Songs of Old Hawaii"

This 18 song CD contains 10 previously unreleased tracks ....

It is every bit as "Clean and Pristine" as his other works of ART ...

He says he is workin' on Dick McIntire Vol 5 and a SOL HOOPII Radio Transcription ... Can't wait for those !!!

His website is being updated and they are workin' on credit card payments .... so if it's down ... try again ... you won't be sorry !!!!

www.cumquatrecords.com.au

Till then his email is ...

guitarworkshop@iprimus.com.au

Rick's "on the money". I've just purchased the 1st 3 Iona CDs along with Augil Goupil's CD, the "Giants of Acoustic Guitar" CD and Bruce's own "Hawaiian Daze" album ... all amazing.
Iona is just such a fabulous player and truly deserves the loving, honouring restoration that Bruce has afforded him.
Bruce is also a great player who doesn't just blindly copy the source material. Like all true artists he injects his own originality into the tune. Do yourself a favour and get a Cumquat ot two.

I will add my .02 to the sentiments above. BUY THESE WONDERFUL RECORDINGS! I've learned soooooooo much about that style of music and that era. Great, fun stuff that deserves the revival I believe will come because of these fabulous restorations.

Saving up my pennies to get more!

Whew .... I'm flat wore out.

Track 17 (one of the previously unreleased)is one of my all time favorites ... Wailana (Drowsy Waters) ....

Been playin' along with it and I'll tell ya .... his vibrato is SO FAST and FLAWLESS ...

Amazing what can be done with a single string ... and when he grabs a few ... HYPNOTIC is a good word !!!

If ya never heard Andy Iona .... you owe it to yourself as a steel player ... no matter what your musical preference is ... to pick up one of these ....

All this without a THUMB ...

I like Andy Iona, and as Rick says "His vibrato is so fast and flawless". Very bouncy
Hawaiian style all without a thumb.

I heard that he put on one fingerpick BACKWARDS to imitate a thumb ... for arpeggios and strums ....

The Rickenbacher book said he lost it in a bar fight ..... Lorene Ruymar's book said he lost it in a machine shop at school ?????

He also writes great Hawaiian music. He was the composer of "Sand".

Regarding Andy Iona's picking technique -- Bob "Pulevai" Waters who lives in Independence, KY and has met, conversed, played with and observed their style with about 95% of the Hawaiian Steel Players says that Andy lost his thumb in a machine shop accident. I know that Lorene's book says that it was in a bar brawl and I recall reading that in another article "somewhere".
Anyway his thumb was gone and Bob says that he reversed the finger pick and wore it on his ring finger to make the strums that you hear. Bob knew him well. In addition to "Sand", Andy wrote "How D'ya Do", "South Sea Island Magic", "Rose of Waikiki" and many other songs. I hope this helps you in your search for facts.

I enjoyed the two-part article on Bob ... in the HSGA newsletter. What a great place to hang around in their youth ... Hollywood in the '30s/'40s ....

The Rickenbacher book also told of his heavy guage strings ... collapsing a Frypan during a show ... talk about bar pressure
