just purchased SB Audigy2 platinum. The Best Buy rep said my Compaq Presario purchased in 2000 certainly adequate. I was very careful hooking up the internal drive and card correctly. After begining software installation, at some point a window popped up saying "hardware cannot be located. check to make sure properly connected". I was sure it was done correctly so I tried again and succeded to install the program. However, the computer was not working right afterwards: could not dial up, could not access settings from start menu. kindof a freez up thing.
Now, instructions say to prepare your computer first by removing any audio cards and uninstall its sofware.
There were no cards. that is.. besides whatever came built-in with it new.
It also said to dissable any on-board audio device in your computer. I may have mucked up this step. I have at least one or two things like REal Player(but thats not an on board device.thats a program right). Does that apply?
Anyway, I thoght I should undo things as best I new how. So i disconnected drives and card. Thought UNinstalling the program was a good idea too, so I THINK I succeded at that at least partially anyway. Now I'm able to dial-up, as you can see, and holler for help. Thanks.

Steven,

What the manufacturer meant was for you to "disable" your on-board soundcard. Most PC manufacturers can save money by building the sound cards right on the MotherBoard. This also brings down the cost of the PC, but now when the sound card goes bad, you need to replace the MotherBoard. Anyway, you can disable this through the "Device Manager" in your Windows operating system.

If you have Win98 or 95, you can "right-click" on MY COMPUTER and then scroll down to "Properties" and then select the second tab of the menu which should be "Device" or something like that. Now scroll down to your audio device and then Right-Click the device and scroll down to "Disable".

If you have Win2000 or XP you can Right-Click MY COMPUTER and then scroll down to "properties". Then click the Third tab that says "Hardware", then push the button that says "Device Manager". Then find your audio device, right-click it and then select "Disable".

Once you have the audio device disabled then try your installation again.

You should only "disable" your audio device if you do not have a seperate sound card.

Can you find your CD-ROM drive? If so, then follow the "little" cable out of it. That cable carries the "Audio" signal off of the CD drive and into the card. If that goes into a "card" then that will be your sound card. If it goes into the HUGE green board, then that is the "Mother Board" and you will need to disable it with the instructions above.

Let me know how it goes or if you need any more help.

Thanks!
Mark

Thanks Mark, everything was reconnected and disabled properly and the installation now complete, although I had to locate a window 98 SE cd durring the process to complete the installation as that was required. I had win98 plus.
Now I can spend some time getting acquanted with this thing. This is my first time doing anything with the computer besides surfing the net.
I mainly got this card in order to have decent sound quality for the BIAB which I just purchased as well but have yet to install. Oh yes...I'll need to hook up my regular old stereo speakers too, which I understand will work fine.
who knows, a few more items and I could be doin some PC home recording.

Steve,

Great job on getting that connected. Once you open up the computer and see that it really isn't complicated all the other projects you will attempt will come very easily. Congrats!

I'm right behind you Steve...I ordered one from Amazon a few days ago. They have a supersaver free shipping, but it takes a little longer.

Keep us posted of any "tricks" you learn along the way to make it operate smoothly!

I got the sound card in Ok and everything seems to be working, however, when I connect the External I/O unit to the sound card, I'm not getting any power to the external unit. I checked all the cables, and they are secure.

I've emailed tech support, but am waiting to hear back.

One complaint I have with Creative Labs is that they don't have a toll free tech support number. Call me cheap, but after I pay $223 for a soundcard, I don't expect to have to pay long distance charges to get help!

Does anyone else have the Audigy 2 Platinum Ex model? Once the Ad-link cables are connected to the soundcard and the external unit, shouldn't it automatically power up?

Never mind...I realized the problem. Inside the comptuer, the Audigy 2 Ex has a multi-colored power cable that connects from the sound card to the computer itself (not the little grey wire that was plugged into my old card). The Audigy 2 doesn't require the grey cable; so, I plugged in the multi-colored cable and now have power to the external unit.

Now to play with it to see what it can do!!!
