I was thinking of that same question myself. I bought the new Soundblaster audigy 2 platinum ex. It says I have to have win98se.
My son said why stop there? Why not 2000 or XP?
I've been debating an upgrade for a while.
My wife's new computer has XP, so it's just a walk to the other room to get the disk. My son said he has had no problem with XP.
I guess I'll bite the bullet tommorrow and load it. My guess is by the end of summer I'll have all the problems worked out. Maybe I'll keep a log of what happens to post here if needed. |

I've seen Win98 at Wal-Marts recently.
Ken, from what I understand, you can't use a previously installed version of XP. If I remember right, when it's installed the first time, it sends the registration info, and a "snapshot" of the hardware of the pc it's installed on into Microsoft...then when you load it on yours, it sends your info to MS as well to see if it has already been installed on another pc, and if it finds that it has, it won't work.
Also, if you don't let it dial in to MS to register itself, it'll only work for 30 days I think.

I was thinking of upgrading to XP, but I'm afraid most of my programs, (software,) won't work with it. Some of them offer an XP edition of the program, but you have to shell out almost as much as the original price. Very few are update-able. I might just keep using 98 until I just can't anymore...

I Have a SB Audigy MP3 card in my computer (not Audigy 2.) I "Upgraded" to XP Home Edition from 98 OSR2 (not SE). For me it was a big mistake! I now have a cricket in my audio whenever there is motion in the video. I have tried every thing that Microsoft and Creative Labs (Sound Blaster)have suggested except a clean reload of XP, which would require me to backup everything on my hard drive, reformat, load XP, then reload everything else. Oh, by the way XP Home Edition does not have a back up feature (XP Pro does but not Home Edition.)Your experiance my be different. And yes, XP requires that you "authenticate" it either online or by phone with in 30 days. Also if you make a major change in your hardware, XP may think you have changed machines and you my have to reauthenticate it by phone! By the way I like Sound Blaster cards.

Well, I opted to upgrade to win98se. I know, microshaft stopped all support of this program on July 1 03. So now the fun begins.
My audio drivers are gone. My choice is to reload the windows drivers (WMD) or to use the Creative labs drivers (VXD). Anyone have any thoughts?
My optical mouse no longer has the back/forward buttons operating....now where the heck did I put that disk?
I don't know what else is not functioning/compromised but I will certainly find out as time goes on.
This is more fun than watching uncle Mel puking in the parking lot.
Not. |
