I just picked up a 1981 Maveric from a friend going thru a divorce. It's in about as new condition as I've ever seen, the case still had the price ticket on it.

My question is: It would be impractical for me to send it somewhere to have the E's able to raise and lower like my other pedal steel, so my thought is to learn to play E13th on it without the pedals. Has anyone done this with the added two strings? If so, what guage and string would I use?

Thanks for any help. I'd sell it but from my understanding, they aren't worth very much.

I used to play a Sho-Bud Maverick without pedals, standing up, tuned to E13. The legs are just aluminum tubes, so it's easy to make longer ones. Here's the tuning and approximate gauges I used:

G# .012
E .015
C# .018
B .020p
G# .024w
E .030
D .034
B .038
G# .046
E .056
I tend to go pretty heavy on my gauges, especially on the high strings, because I like the sound of tight strings on non-pedal guitar.

The tuning was great for rock-a-billy, which was what I was playing at the time. If I were to do it again today, I'd eliminate the low G# and add a high F# (.013) as the first string. The high F# really adds a lot of to the basic E13 tuning.

I'd stay with the non-pedal approach. The Maverick is a one-trick pony. It does OK for what it does, as long as you don't stomp on the pedals very hard. Trying to get it to do more raise or lower changes with its plastic changer fingers and creaky mechanism is like trying to polish pasture patties.

Hi Bobby!

Could ya give a little hint how you would use that high F# in rockabilly?

Chromatic riffs?
