I scan documents for a living, so I guess I'll chime in. Any scanner can scan text well; pictures are usually the tough part. You need to change the settings on your scanner's software. If you have the option of selecting "text" (as opposed to text plus pictures, magazine, photo, etc.) try that first. If that doesn't work, look for an option called "sketch art" or "OCR Text" Basically, you want about 300 dpi and a black and white scan, not grayscale or color.
